Nikolaos Foroglou, MD, PhD has graduated from the Medical School of Aristotle University of Thessaloniki in 1993 with the mention “excellent”.
After completing his obligatory military service in the Hellenic Air Force General Hospital, Athens, (1993-1995) and his community medical service in the highlands of North Greece (1995-1996), he obtained the Diploma of Clinical Neurology from the Institute of Neurology, National Hospital for Neurology and Neurosurgery, Queen Square. Thereafter he returned in Thessaloniki, where he completed the Residency Program in Neurosurgery at the AHEPA University Hospital (1997-2001).
After being certified from the National Neurosurgical Examination Board, and the European Association of Neurosurgical Societies (EANS) in 2001, he moved to Boston, USA sponsored by a scholar of the Aristotle University for a research fellowship on neuroncology ( Brigham & Women Hospital, affiliated hospital to Harvard Medical School). At that time under the mentorship of Professor P. McLaren Black, he was trained in surgical neuro-oncology (multi-disciplinary approach, intraoperative imaging (MRI), intraoperative monitoring, awake craniotomy) and participate in research projects concerning the survival of malignant primary brain tumors. In his way back to Greece he did a fellowship in Functional Neurosurgery (epilepsy, movement disorders, pain, and spasticity) and Paediatric Neurosurgery in the University Hospital of Lausanne, Switzerland under the guidance of Professor J.G. Villemure.
Elected unanimously as Lecturer of Neurosurgery in the Aristotle University of Thessaloniki in 2002, as Assistant Professor in 2010 and as Associated Professor in 2016 he is currently appointed at the Department of Neurosurgery, AHEPA University Hospital, managing patients mainly with brain tumors, and pituitary adenomas. He implement in the Department all neuroendoscopic techniques, intraoperative ultrasound imaging, intraoperative mapping and neuromonitoring.
He visited for short periods 3 European Neurosurgical Departments (National Hospital/London in 1996, Gui de Chulliac/Montpellier in 2007 and 2010, Grosshadern LMU/Munich in 2009). He is currently leading two research programs on brain mapping and gliomas and is participating in many others research projects (epilepsy and brain plasticity). He has published 27 papers in international peer reviewed journals and authored 6 chapters book in international editions.
He has been member of the editorial board of “Spinal Cord” and “World Neurosurgery”.
During his academic career he delivered 78 lectures, participated in 104 workshops and 115 congresses, and finally participated in the organization of 18 congress and scientific events.
Nicolas Foroglou is active member of many international neurosurgical societies (European Association of Neurosurgical Societies, Congress of Neurological Surgeons, American Association of Neurological Surgeons, Tumor section of CNS/AANS, Societe de Neurochirurgie de langue francaise, European Society of Stereotactic and Functional Neurosurgery, European Association of Neuro-Oncology).
He is member of the Education Committee of the Hellenic Neurosurgical Society since 2009 and member of the Administrative Council since 2011. Currently he is serving as President of the National Neurosurgical Society.
